Brick Wall

Reading is something that brings me joy. But, I find myself unable to simply sit down and read at times. I have not been able to pin point what exactly the issue with this is, but my observation of this personal phenomenon is consistent with other areas of trouble I have encountered.

Again, instead of reading, here I am wasting time propounding imaginary shapes that might contain my conscious.

“Anyway, here’s Wonderwall..”

Mental Models

I am of the opinion that there are at least two partitions of consciousness. In this mental model, I propose these partitions can be in a number of states as they process and interpret internal or external stimuli. Unlike a computer, where transistor states are either “on” or “off” these states are ternary:

  • Active - The brain is wholly engaged with internal and external stimuli. In this mode my brain is: Observing, interpreting, interacting, matching, and utilizing information to build new ideas.
  • Passive - The brain is on “autopilot” and is primarily engaging with external stimuli. In this mode my brain is: Observing, interpreting and lightly interacting with information. Often times, this information is stored in a “medium term” storage of sorts, for use when this partition returns to an active state. (This almost always happens in the shower or when idle in some other fashion).
  • Semi-Active - The brain is observing and interacting with internal and external stimuli in real time. New ideas are not being generated but relevant memories and experiences are accessible in this state for use when in a purely intellectually stimulating situation, like watching movies, playing video games, reading etc. Like passive states, this state seems to store data in the medium/short term for further processing during more active states.
